Missed Class to Catch Up on Sleep

Today, I missed class because last night I had a family member submitted to the Hospital because of health issues. I had to drive my mother and myself to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital at 11 pm to meet up with my family. The hospital was packed with people, patients and other family members as hospitals usually are but I didn’t expect to be there for as long as I did. I was tired, hungry and just overall over waiting in the hospital waiting room. My family member was finally treated and discharged at 3 am. I then had to drive my family members home to their house in Flushing then drove my mom and myself home to Far Rockaway. I didn’t step foot into my apartment building till after 4 am. I knew I wouldn’t survive the day on 4 hours of sleep so I decided to miss CT101 for my health and get my necessary 8 hours of sleep.

1990’s-2000’s Vaporwave Creation

Today we created our own vaporwaves. If you don’t know what is a vaporwave? A Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music and an Internet meme that emerged in the early 2010s. The style is defined by its appropriation of 1980s and 1990s mood music styles, internet imagery glitch art, anime, pop culture and many more. If I’m being honest, I didn’t know what a vaporwave was either but I have heard of the term. It was really fun and cool to create my own. For my first vaporwave, I don’t like it all that much but i might make another. I basically just grabbed a bunch of transparent vaporwave graphics from google and just copied and pasted them onto the Vaporwave pink and blue background grid in Photoshop. I mostly chose images/graphics from the 90’s considering that I was born in the mid 90’s and I loved everything about the 1990’s and the early 2000’s. It just sucks that a lot of things that debuted during these times are no longer available such as television shows, toys, clothing, sneakers, etc.

Below is my Vaporwave:

DS106 Bucket List

I completed the DS106 Bucket List Collage as seen above. These are the things I would like to do for my bucket list: Travel around the World to the U.K., Europe, Australia, and etc. I would like to see the world outside of New York City. The next image is skydiving. I love to try new things and I am kind of an adrenaline junkie. I live for stuff like that-the thrill and excitement. Then I would like to meet Chris Brown. I have been a supporter and fan of his ever since his first debut as a singer and I’ve watched him grow as a singer, actor, artist, father, and more. Lastly, I would love to race a car. Again, adrenaline junkie. I love to drive and the speed/acceleration you can achieve when I am behind the wheel. I only made a collage of four images but I have plenty of other things I would like to accomplish before I “kick the bucket”. This was a fun and simple project and I did enjoy making the collage.

DS106 Assignments

The two ds106 assignments that stood out to me were a mashup assignment called “Animoji Karoke” and a visual assignment called “Bucket List”. I screenshot the pages and their descriptions can be found under this paragraph. I think I need to relearn how to use an iPhone considering that I’ve been an android user for about 4 years and the last iPhone I owned was the 5C and it didn’t have Animoji like today’s models do. I would like to attempt more assignments dealing with photoshop seeing as how I’m still not used to using it and I can get confused and lost when navigating through the application. But for now, I would like to start off with something simple like the following. I think all skills involving technology are important considering the fact that it is always improving and evolving. Technology has come a long way from beepers, dial-up telephones to mobile phones and laptops.

Biggie Smalls GIF

Today in class, I created my very own GIF featuring deceased Rap Artist… Notorious B.I.G or Biggie Smalls. I chose Biggie Smalls as one of my many inspirations because Biggie was an icon during his time by creating his own raps and representing for all East Coast rappers in the game. Even though, Biggie was shot and killed before I could comprehend what Rap even was at my young age. My older brother actually put me onto Rap and Hip-Hop and I started listening to Biggie, Tupac, N.W.A., Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and etc. Biggie Smalls is a legend in the Rap Industry and his memory will continue to live on.

Creating my first GIF using Photoshop was a lot of work and steps to make sure that I followed Ryan’s instructions to the T so that I can get used to applications such as Photoshop especially considering that I’m a beginner. Although, it was many steps to follow, the end result of my GIF came out really cool. I would love to create another one using someone else but I’m not too confident in myself to create a different one without help or step-by-step instructions.

Panoramanic Fun!

Our assignment was to create our own panoramic story within our group during class. We came up with three different scenarios. One was a reference to the Friends Intro couch scene, another was where we were on our phones then we just started laughing randomly and lastly a group member noticed my Hey Arnold t-shirt and we looked up an image of the show’s characters posing on a stoop of a house and we posed certain ways in the photo. We had fun creating these panoramic photos but it was complicated coming up with scenarios and the props that we used like the couch and the stool because we had to move them several times to multiply it into the photo as well.

Memes Art? Uhh… Yes!

In my opinion, I think that memes are art. Art is a way to express yourself, your feelings or your experiences. Why can’t memes be considered art if they are a way for a person to express themselves?Art comes in many different forms such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, print-making, graffiti and these are just the traditional methods of art.  Art is always evolving and improving just like technology is.

Art shouldn’t be limited into just one form or method. Art can be your therapy or your outlet. I say the quote “Think Outside the Box” can be applied here.

Memes are also a way to tell someone how you’re feeling in pictures instead of having to write it out. The message can be translated by different techniques, which I think that’s where memes come in. I guess memes can be both good and bad for communication but I also think it depends on the type of meme and the message you want to convey. Some memes are hilariously funny while others can be very offensive.

Below are memes I created:

How I Feel About CT101

Seeing as how this is only the second week of the Spring semester 2019 at York College. I don’t really have any reactions to the class CT101: Digital Storytelling. We still have many weeks left in the semester so I am keeping an open mind to what Ryan is going to teach the class as well as what new things I will learn.

My reactions:

I’m very curious to learn about new things in this class

My face when Ryan talks about things in class that I’ve never heard about or didn’t know
My face when Ryan taught us how to create our own GIFs
Listening to Ryan in class
Walking into CT101 class still tired

TV Show Obsession-Law & Order: SVU

The thing that makes me happy is watching a television show or movie that I find interesting.  One of my favorite television show is “Law & Order: SVU”. Law & Order: SVU is an American crime drama television series created by Dick Wolf for NBC. It is currently the longest running scripted non-animated U.S. primetime tv series. I have seen all 18 seasons and have never missed one episode. I love the drama and action as well as the characters. I find the television show very captivating and I can never look away from the television when it comes on.  At the beginning of every “Law & Order: SVU” episode includes the same blurb: “The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event.” But I  know how false that claim is. Unfortunately, real life “heinous crimes” have given the long-running crime drama inspiration since 1999.

“Selfish” (Season 10) is based on of the crime committed by Casey Anthony, the infamous party-girl mother who was accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008. Casey Anthony was portrayed by actress and singer Hilary Duff.

“American Tragedy” is based on the 2012 tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin & the racial comments from George Zimmerman who was portrayed by a celebrity southern chef who shoots an unarmed black teenager mistaking him for a rapist.

“October Surprise” is based on the Anthony Weiner sexting scandal. Anthony Weiner, a former congressman from New York City, pled guilty in 2017 for sexting with a 15-year-old girl. ADA Barba is put in a difficult position after the detectives investigate his childhood friend, a mayoral candidate accused of rape.

“Baby Killer” is based on the 2000 school shooting of Kayla Rolland by her six-year-old classmate Dedrick Darnell Owens at Buell Elementary School in Mount Morris Township, Mich. The episode portrays After a seven-year-old girl is shot by one of her male classmates, the detectives must track down how the little boy got the gun in the first place.

“Patrimonal Burden” is based on the reality show “19 Kids and Counting” and the Josh Duggar molestation controversy. The episode portrays A reality television family of 10 finds out that their 13-year-old daughter is pregnant. The detectives investigate and discover that one of the sons was also sexually abusing the girls in the family.

I love how “Law & Order: SVU mimics the actual crimes and sheds more light to said crimes that have happened over the past 20 years. It’s just upsetting how some episodes in the tv series are not solved or the suspect is not convicted.
